Announced today, there’s a new PS3 for £299 with no backwards compatibility, a smaller hard disk and only 2 USB ports, no media card drives. A pretty good price. The 60GB model drops to £349 and includes two first party PS3 games. So that’s what they are doing with Lair then!!
It’s a good price drop and takes it into 360 range especially as the features dropped aren’t essential in my opinion. However it leaves just one little question. Where’s the fecking games?

The table show the top 20 games on the PS3 and XBox 360 according to the average ratings as shown on Metacritic. I thought this would be the fairest way as biased reviews would be averaged ut across platforms. Doesn’t make very good reading for the PS3, does it? Where are the AAA exclusive titles for the PS3? They’ve been and gone and weren’t that good. It’s poor that the best rated exclusive title is Resistance which was a release game. It was good but that review score was very generous. Compare with the top 3 on the 360 and it makes for a compelling reason not to pick up a PS3. Even cross platform games are picking up the same score if not better on the 360.
If Sony wants to pick up sales it needs to address the games. If the PS3 had the AAA titles that the 360 has enjoyed then price wouldn’t be an issue and there wouldn’t be an entry level console launched today.
Cream of the PS3 crop is undoubtedly Motorstorm. Still it’s killer app after a year. Of the rest, a handful of multiplatform titles deserve better marks, notably Skate, and Sega Rally. Warhawk for me is let down by the appaulling PS3 pad, and Resistance was overrated. It’s a nice machine, but there’s been nothing for it, at least nothing I can’t get on the 360. Time to sell? I guess that window’s passed with the price drop.
I got very tired of Motorstorm. Little or no depth and long loading times were very off putting. Some bizarre online problems too. Resistance, for me, is a good game showing the graphic potential on the PS3 and also how good online play is too.
As for the pad…just doesn’t bother me but I know it irritates the hell out of you. Doesn’t get in the way when I play games – guess I just adapt to it as there isn’t much choice.
Think your right about selling window though…been and gone.
The Wii has disappointed me so far as well. Zelda still by far the best thing available for it, and Blue Dragon is, for me, probably a better game…
Reading that list I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m no longer a gamer. Hell I’ve only just completed Half-Life 2 today! Surely the ‘premium’ PS3 is still much better value than the new ‘lite’ version?
Half Life 2 – I’ve not completed although with Orange Box coming out I’m looking forward to going back to it. Christmas though…Halo and PGR4 will do for now.
Agreed – premium is better value although as it’s getting discontinued it looks like folk will need to be quick to pick one up.
I happened to be at Bluewater today, so I visited the PS3 tour stand. Very disappointing. A bit of a failure in my eyes. Maybe it opened some other people’s eyes to what the PS3 is capable of, but there wasn’t anything there that I didn’t already know.
Also even staff at the Sony Center don’t know the full specifications and the differences between the 40Gb and 60Gb.
