The Beast…part deux

I’ve been after a new pc for the last few months. Picking up Battlefield Vietnam and watching it jerk (oo-er) while on it’s lowest settings was just too painful. I didn’t even pick up Far Cry as I knew it would be a pointless experience. I had resigned to getting a base unit only, probably from Evesham and probably costing around £1100 give or take a few pounds and features.

Then I got a tip off from King Arthur. He used the Dell Outlet Site to pick up a bargain pc. I stalked the site for the last week or so and on Friday finally bit the bullet and picked my new pc. 3.0Ghz Pentium, 160Gig Hard disk, I Gig of Ram and a 256 Meg Radeon 9800XT. £800. Class. Oh – Windows XP Professional as well. Hopefully should be here within the next fortnight. Now…what to do with the old one. I’ll probably use it as some sort of media storage/server. It’s a bit noisy so may have to try and quieten it a bit.

Firefox Vulnerability

So a flaw in Firefox has finally been found – get version 0.9.2 to fix that problem. At first glance it seems to dent the argument that Firefox is more secure and safer than good old IE. However, look a little deeepr and you’ll see just how quickly the issue was resolved. In just over a day and a half the new release of Firefox was posted for everyone to download – also the Mozilla team were quite open about the flaw. Microsoft have a lot to learn. For a timeline of the fix from first find to download available click here.

The Wedding

Yesterday was Graham and Zeenids wedding. It didn’t start out well as the weather was awful and the flowers were late. As me and Graham were getting changed he realised he had left his waistcoat at home – one Betty’s mad dash later and all was well with the world. The ceremony itself was superb – Zeenid looked amazing but alas I have no photo’s (yet) as I was best man and had ‘duties’ to attend to.

By sheer luck we also managed to get photo’s at the Botanics – the sun even came out for some of them although it was breezy and quite chilly – damned kilt :-). It was then onto One Devonshire Gardens for the meal and reception. The food was fantastic and a great time was had by all – we even got a sneaky peek at Graham & Zeenids room for the night. They are now off to Hawaii for their honeymoon where I’m sure it will be a little warmer.

So after all these years G is finally married…I wonder who’s next?

BBC Charter Renewal

BBC published it’s future proposals today. The pdf and interesting quote can be found here – BBC affirms Creative Archive in Charter Renewal plans. From DG Mark Thompson…

We want to builld a digital world based on universal access, open standards and unencryption. Encryption, subscription and other forms of digital exclusion lead to widespread welfare losses. They may have a role within the total broadcasting ecology, but the idea that they can successfully replace free-to-air public service broadcasting flies in the face both of economic theory and real-world experience.

The online creative archive sounds amazing but would surely grow to a huge undertaking even for a public broadcaster like the BBC?

The best team won

Cracking game of football last night, and like any team who loses on penalties England were very unlucky. However Portugal deserved the win. They played good attacking football and had the most possession. England seemed content to sit back and soak it up – they really should have chased the game and tried to kill it. As for Campbell’s goal that was chalked off, Terry did have an arm on the goalie and everyone now knows the protection a goalkeeper gets. If had been the other way round with Portugal scoring a late goal and the referee allowing it we wouldn’t hear the end of it from English fans saying they were cheated. Nae luck.

As for Beckhams penalty…I’m still laughing much like the Portuguese supporter last night. Priceless.
